Safety First

by Marcia Parnell

As Becket’s summer population swells, so does the traffic. New speed-warning signs have been placed on some of the Town’s busiest routes that carry commuters, commercial vehicles and locals: Route 8 at the pedestrian crossing to and from the beach at Shaw Pond/Mountain Grove, two locations on Yokum Pond Road and on Wade Inn Road.

Town Administrator Kathe Warden urges drivers to stay focused and within the posted speed limit, but also urges walkers and cyclists to walk and ride defensively. Pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic (being especially mindful on blind corners), wear bright-colored clothing, limit distractions like cell phones and ear buds, even in quiet and low- traffic areas, and always use pedestrian crosswalks and sidewalks when they are available. When walking with others, single file is a best practice as traffic approaches and passes.

Says Warden, “Even though pedestrians have the right of way, is walking too close to traffic worth the risk?” Cyclists should ride with traffic, wear bright clothing and use front and rear lights to alert drivers as they approach riders. Tree shade and bright sun can often camouflage riders from oncoming drivers.

Becket is a small rural town, but keeping safe on our roads requires all the attention needed in larger towns and cities.
