Letter From the Editors

The Becket Beat has been a charmed publication. We often shake our heads in wonder at how everything has fallen into place – and how we’ve managed to sustain it for over three years. One of the key reasons for that success has been our beloved and admired writer, Marilyn Fish.

Many of you have shared your appreciation for Marilyn’s well-researched articles, which brought to life important historical figures, events, and notable residents of Becket. Her historical pieces have explored the Becket school system, the Becket Truant School, the Giving Tree, the Great Flood of 1927, Happy Land, the Town pound, veteran Joseph Plumb Martin, feminist Hannah Cutler, the westward migration of Becket families to Ohio in the early 1800s, and the Boston Cane story—bridging both past and present.

Marilyn also highlighted local talent, including artist Crispina ffrench, senior advocate Steven Rosenthal, writer Lara Tupper, and Sister Judith of the Pease Store. We share all of this because Marilyn has stepped down from her position as of June. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for her invaluable contributions to The Beat and to the community of Becket. She will be deeply missed.
